Mobile Apps

Vidcaster provides a Media RSS (MRSS) feed for your account, used to serve your podcasts, which can also be provided to a variety of services that make mobile apps. Please note, these feeds are not available on YouTube powered Vidcaster sites.

One such service is AppMakr, which lets you make an iPhone app in mere minutes with no knowledge of code required. It's also free, though in order to publish apps to the iTunes Store you'll need to pay Apple $99 for a developer license. Here's how to get started:

  1. Go to appmakr.com and register for a new account.
  2. Click the "Create New App" button on your Dashboard.
  3. Paste in your podcast feed. This is either http://example.vidcaster.com/podcasts/recent/ for all of your recent videos or http://example.vidcaster.com/podcasts/yourgroupname/ for a podcast of one specific group. If you've set up Vidcaster on your domain, then it's just http://example.com/podcasts/recent/ or http://example.com/podcasts/yourgroupname/.
  4. At this point you'll have a nice preview of your new app on the right. You can name your app, add images, and much more.
  5. You should also go to the "Tabs" screen and confirm that the "RSS/ATOM Feed URL" field matches the podcast URL you pasted in earlier. In our tests, AppMakr would occasionally grab the non-podcast feed by mistake and would need to be corrected.

Another service to try is iSites.

Be aware that there are caveats to Apple's approval process: they tend to discourage merely porting your MRSS feed into an app, so it's a good idea to add additional content in order to produce a more full-featured application. Refer to the Apple App Store Review Guidelines for more information.
