Whitelabel Wildcard Domain Setup

This article is intended for technical users with an understanding of Internet DNS standards. Whitelabel features are only available on Enterprise level plans, please contact sales@vidcaster.com for more information.

One of the features of the Vidcaster Whitelabel Solution is to allow your users to create "child" accounts under your domain name, such as "childsubdomain.yourdomain.com"

In order for this to function correctly, your Domain Name System Host (DNS Host) must support "wildcard subdomains". In other words, any request to "anysubdomain.yourdomain.com" will resolve to the Vidcaster server to respond with the appropriate child site. This is a feature that only select DNS Hosts offer. For example, GoDaddy (a combined Registrar and DNS Host) does not offer Wildcard subdomain support.

Example Instructions with Zonomi

We provide here basic instructions using Zonomi as a DNS Host for setting up wildcard subdomains pointing to a Vidcaster Whitelabel server cluster. There are many DNS Host options out there, Zonomi is a basic provider we have found to be cost effective and reliable. However, Vidcaster cannot be held liable for DNS hosting issues, so please do your research as you choose a DNS Host for your specific project needs.

Once you have registered a domain name, you will need to edit your domain name settings first with your Registrar. At the Registrar level you will point domain name servers to Zonomi using the following:

  • NS1.ZONOMI.COM
  • NS2.ZONOMI.COM
  • NS3.ZONOMI.COM
  • NS4.ZONOMI.COM

Once you have pointed your domain's nameservers to Zonomi, you'll need to create two A-Record (IP Address) entries in Zonomi:

  • *.yourdomain.com points to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
  • yourdomain.com points to XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

Replace XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX with your Vidcaster Enterprise Cluster IP Address(es). Speak with your Vidcaster technical account representative for your Enterprise Cluster IP addresses, these can vary depending on project.
